ORBITS S4 — Playing Instructions
Grip the S4 by its upper ridged cylindrical surface using your fingertips. Spin it firmly with its spherical point contacting the board. Tilt the board to move the S4 in the direction of your tilt. Keep it moving.
Develop your steering skills through practice, focusing on timing and rhythm. The S4 responds immediately and precisely to skilled technique. Relax your muscles and breathe normally. As long as you play correctly, the S4 will continue to spin. If it slows and begins to wobble, your technique needs adjustment.
Forward and Backward Steering
There is a distinct difference between steering forward and backward. Steering forward — in the same direction as the spin — is cooperative. The S4 moves willingly in the forward direction and responds even to gentle input. Steering backward — against the direction of spin — requires more force. The S4 resists backward motion, though the resistance is easily overcome with more aggressive, rhythmic play. When switching back to forward steering, ease up immediately, as the S4 now requires a lighter touch.
Learning Progression
Begin by mastering forward motion, as it is easier. Once comfortable, progress to backward steering, recognizing that it demands greater energy output. The most common mistake when traveling backward is applying too little force — tilt more dramatically than you would going forward.
Playing Surfaces
The S4 performs on most smooth surfaces, though some work better than others. Experiment freely. A hardcover book, a record album, or most flat menus make adequate playing surfaces. The official ORBITS board is optimal.
Tossing
The S4 can be tossed to another player's board while spinning. To launch, steer diagonally from one corner to the opposite far corner repeatedly, building rhythm. As the S4 approaches the far corner, give the board a small flick with your fingers to send it airborne in your intended direction.
A Final Note
ORBITS is challenging and fascinating. Skills improve quickly with focused practice and attention. With persistence, you will develop a level of control that is genuinely empowering.
